Atheism- Not So Easy

I had just read an article by Jug Suraiya in the Times of India e-paper(which sadly isn't free anymore) which deals with how people had decided to be 'chelas' of an all-powerful person named God and used to make deals with him to fulfill their personal ambitions. One particular fact the article pointed out which astonished me was that there was a high degree of correlation between corruption and 'religious' nature of people of a country.I suddenly reflected on how I myself had been a sycophant of 'God' to get many personal desires fulfilled, though I never know how much he was actually involved in them.
It was then that I decided to make a switch and try being an atheist. I kicked off proceedings by boycotting an 'important puja' at home which was aimed at bringing prosperity to family members.I stopped going to temples altogether(much to the dismay of my mother).I decided that I shall decide and shape my own life instead of leaving it at the mercy of a fictitious person named God.Some days passed, nothing happened.Few more days passed, nothing good happened.A week later, horrible things happened and life became miserable.I tried my best not to relate any of these to my new found atheist practices but in the end, I finally relented.
I learnt that it is much easier to believe that there is someone who can influence events in your life and make miracles happen rather that hold the reins and take charge of your own life.May be one fine day, when things are going fine and look to remain the same for some more time, I might try it again. But definitely not for now.

  1. See......exactly what I told you....
I'm not saying that we should be slaves of God and let him take care of everything while all we do is pray to him...
We should by all means try our best to do as much as we can but never forget that the universe has certain power running it and it doesn't hurt to thank that divine energy once in a while...

The moment people start to think they are infi studdmaxx and can accomplish anything just on their own, God has a way of bringing them back down to the ground...

Why do we assume that we are much smarter than generations who have believed in a divine power that is the basis of the Universe....
Bas thoda engineering aur math kya seekh liya we feel that we are intellectually capable of reasoning everything much better than people before us....

Many of the advanced theories and results in engineering dont seem logical to us either.....that doesnt mean they are not true...

Next time exam mein Dittus-Boelter correlation use karna pade....dont use it.....how can yu logically justify that it is true??....yu havnt seen that it is true in practice.....(in fact wen yu had to do the expt. yu dint even get the results properly using those relations....but yu just attributed all the aberrations to unwanted losses!!!)....yet yu choose to believe it because some wise guy named Dittus said its true..

Then why isn't Adi Shankaracharya or many others not as wise as Dittus and Boelter??

Anyways....these are only my views....And I thought I should express them bcos lately a lot of my friends are in this whole frenzy to turn atheist.....And it only shows how badly our religion has been portrayed that a person like you who has learned the Vedas had to consider such options....

Disclaimer: The example of Dittus and Boelter is not meant to cause any disrespect to them in any way and is just an arbitrary example...And yes if you perform careful expt. it turns out to be true yes.....(who knows if you do careful thinking and reflection, the existence of God may just appear as clear to you as the correlations seemed to Dittus and Boelter...!!!!)

  3. My problem with the concept of God lies in the fact that the answer to anything then is "..becasue God made it that way." Science answers ( and is constantly trying to answer) the questions of our identity. If there is a theory( for eg. antimatter) there is a billion dollar experiment to prove/disprove that.God/Religion is rigid.

I suggest listening to the "Lennox versus Dawkins" God Delusion Debate.Atheism v/s Religion(mostly Christianity)

If you are looking for closure for your relationship with atheism I think you will totally agree with "Pascal's Wager."

P.s. If you looking for an 'easy' way out, try being agnostic. I'm one.

  4. What is your answer to everything now....Can you justify anything at all from first principles....??
Science is just a breaking up of things and phenomena to smaller and smaller levels.....
But the question of God's existence lies at that last unexplainable level...
And why is this idea of science and religion being antagonistic so popular??.....this is just a by product of medieval European politics....
In India, the most religious people were also the smartest and wisest who understood the most about life and nature....So the two are not necessarily opposing...
